Marine Collagen Daltons and why are they so important?

Marine collagen daltons weight

There are many collagen supplements on the market, however they are not all equal. The ability of your body to use the collagen ingested depends almost entirely on how well absorbed the collagen – i.e if it can be absorbed across the gut and into the blood, and if so, how well.

Many collagen supplements on the market do not take absorbability into consideration, and therefore they body cannot process them and use them as effectively. How well absorbed your collagen is, is absolutely crucial to realising the possible benefits of any collagen supplement.

What is a Dalton?
There are many types of collagen on the market, but did you know that there are also different weights and sizes of collagen on the market? These different weights are known as Daltons. A Dalton is a measure of molecular weight. When we talk about the Dalton of collagen, we are referring to the weight of each individual collagen molecule. The larger the collagen molecule (the higher number of Daltons) the harder it is to pass through the gut intact.

Why do Daltons matter?
In its natural form such as bone broth and gelatine, collagen has a molecule size of around 30,000 Daltons which is quite large. The pores in the gut are much smaller than this. Therefore, for effective absorption to occur the collagen molecules need to be made smaller. If collagen cannot be absorbed through the gut, the body simply cannot use it.

To make the collagen molecules smaller, collagen goes through a process called hydrolysis which breaks the collagen down into smaller Dalton sizes. After hydrolysis process the collagen is now in much smaller molecular peptide chains (much smaller Dalton weight). They are now very bioavailable to the body and can effectively pass through the gut.

Birch & Wilde Marine Collagen tablets contain 1200mg of hydrolysed Marine Collagen peptides per serving. Our special type of collagen is a trademarked and clinically researched brand known as Naticol – widely regarded among the very best in the world for quality, purity and absorbability.

Naticol Hydrolysed Marine Collagen is 4000 Daltons making it excellent for absorption across the gut and into the blood where it can then get to the cells that need it. Marine Collagen (rather than Bovine Collagen or other types) is particularly beneficial as it provides the type 1 collagen which is specifically needed for the skin, hair, nails, bones, joints and ligaments. Type 1 marine collagen is also excellent for those with gut issues and digestive problems including a leaky gut.

Why do we need collagen?
Collagen is naturally produced by the body and provides the main elastic component in skin, blood vessels, bones and gums. It helps to keep these tissues strong, flexible and helps prevent breaking. In the case of skin, collagen is needed to prevent the formation of wrinkles.

Unfortunately, our natural production of collagen slows down after the age of 25, and therefore to maintain these tissues the same way that we did in our youth, we require a direct dietary source. The best way to get extra collagen with a Dalton size that can be absorbed effectively is to take a hydrolysed collagen supplement with a low Dalton such as Birch and Wilde Marine Collagen.
